SLIP, TRIP AND FALL SERVICES

WMSC specialize in pedestrian walkway surfaces, walk paths, pedestrian accident reconstruction and analysis. We utilize scientific measurements to develop evidence-based opinions. Our safety consultants provide services in the following areas:

Aisles

Our safety consultants ensure that proper width is met, no obstructions are present and proper lighting is provided as detailed by applicable codes. This includes but is not limited to walkways and walk path aisles, public places of assembly, interior building spaces, entrance platforms and more.

Bathtub and Shower Safety and Analysis

Our safety consultants handle slip, trip and fall cases for bathtub and shower accidents. We examine for the ideal safety conditions including the proper placement of handrails and guardrails, slip testing in shower and bathtub areas and more in accordance with the appropriate regulations and standards.

Contamination Sampling

William Marletta Safety Consultants provides guidance for identifying contaminants involved in accidents. By using certified industrial hygiene laboratories, our experts help identify and tie contaminants back to their source so the evidence can be used in litigation. We take samples, send them out and get results that can help make a difference in your case.

Contrast Testing

Poor contrast between surfaces is a major factor in many pedestrian accidents, and it alters the ability of pedestrians to quickly perceive transitions. Our safety experts examine and evaluate accident sites for surface contrast. Through scientific tools, testing, and accurate data, we are able to measure the contrast difference by assessing light reflectance values (LRV’s) in the field.

Crosswalks

We ensure crosswalk adequacy through expert analysis of crosswalk markings, the use of proper paint and more. Do crosswalks terminate to a properly designed curb ramp? Are they constructed to the right specifications? Our experts can help in any crosswalk slip, trip and fall.

Door Closers

Our safety experts evaluate and test door closers to ascertain compliance with codes, rules, regulations and standards, including the speed of door closers and the force of opening and closing doors.

Evaluation of Floor Waxing/Coating

Floor waxing and floor coating play a large role in slip, trip and fall injury accidents. Different waxes are appropriate for certain conditions while others are not. Our safety consultants examine and evaluate surfaces and finishes to determine if they are appropriate for wet floors.

Fall Accident Reconstruction

Our team recreates pedestrian accidents as they happened. We use gait analysis in examining the actual cause of the accident. We also utilize scientific measurements to develop evidence based opinions.

Floor Mats and Runners

Our safety team ensures that ANSI and ASTM requirements are met when it comes to the selection, care and maintenance of floor mats and runners involved in slip, trip and fall accidents.

Flooring Materials

Our experts specialize in the analysis of walkway surfaces, including materials utilized for pedestrian walk paths. We test floor surfaces to evaluate the appropriateness of their use with regards to slip resistance and safety. We measure slip resistance, roughness, contrast, lighting, and evaluate abrupt surface transitions where warranted. We examine and ensure flooring materials are used correctly for indoor and outdoor surfaces.

Illumination

Our safety consultants use a mélange of methods to test for illumination, including time-lapse photography and drone and aerial photography. We measure illumination levels with illumination meters, which are certified and calibrated. Then, we compare the results to known standards and codes.

Landmark Preservation

WMSC examines accidents that transpire at city and state landmarks that have special laws concerning preservation. As historical landmarks are often governed by different laws, our safety consultants are experts in analyzing and identifying codes and standards that put safety above preservation.

Parking Lots

For parking lot accidents, our safety experts evaluate parking lots for tripping hazards, including the identification and assessment of curbs, speed bumps, wheel stops, bollards and driveways.

Sidewalks

WMSC provides pedestrian accident reconstruction on sidewalks and pedestrian walkways/walk paths. We evaluate sidewalk conditions for abrupt surface transitions, holes, changes in level, underground tree roots, nearby utilities and anything else that may affect surface and subsurface conditions. Our safety experts look for compliance with regulations and good and accepted safe practice with regard to the installation, repair and maintenance of the walking surface.

Single-Step Risers

Single-step risers are generally not permitted in most building codes and walkway standards. Our team evaluates single-step risers with respect to the adequacy of visual cues, markings, handrails and conformance to the appropriate codes.

Slip Testing BOT 3000-E

The BOT 3000-E can measure both static and dynamic coefficient of friction with a variety of tests in dry and wet conditions. Our safety experts use the latest tile slip testing technology for the approved American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A-326.3 and A-137.1. We’re trained to utilize the BOT 3000-E and our equipment is calibrated and certified routinely—so our evidence holds up in court.

Slip Testing English-XL

The English-XL is capable of accurately measuring the slip resistance of most floor surfaces, including surfaces that are wet or contaminated with other debris or liquids. Our team is trained to utilize the English-XL in accordance with ANSI and ASTM testing methods.

Stairs

Our in-house safety consultants specialize in stairway analysis, including treads, risers and nosings. We analyze and assess the state of stairs as related to building codes and applicable standards. Our team performs physical measurements during inspections for the following: risers, treads, landings, handrail heights, handrail diameters, handrail spacing, riser heights, tread/riser uniformity, pitch of treads, step geometry and more.

Ramps, Curb Ramps

Our safety consultants specialize in walkway analysis specific to ramps. We evaluate the safety of ramps and measure, document and photograph the severity of the slope. In addition, we look for the use of adequate handrails. All evidence is then compared to ANSI A-117.1, ADA and other appropriate building codes to ensure ramps meet the correct specifications.

Roughness Testing

WMSC utilizes roughness testing as a measurement to test the floor surface’s topography for dryness or slipperiness. We follow guidance posted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). We examine, test and analyze the slip potential on a floor surface based on the roughness ranges. Our in-house safety consultant is a Ph.D. level researcher of floor surface roughness as it relates to slipperiness.
